Prof. Malami Umar Tambawal
Message from the President
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. On behalf of the Governing Board and the entire staff of the Counselling Practitioners Council of Nigeria, I warmly welcome all counselling professionals, institutional partners, and members of the public to our official platform.
The Counselling Practitioners Council of Nigeria (CPCN), established under the authority of the CPCN Act, 2022, is a statutory body entrusted with one of the most critical mandates in Nigeria's professional landscape: regulating and advancing the practice of counselling for the protection of the Nigerian public. The formal establishment of this Council marks a defining and historic moment — a moment that the counselling profession has long anticipated.
As practitioners, we are aware of the immense power embedded in the counselling relationship. The counsellor is often the last refuge for individuals in emotional crisis, the guide for youth at crossroads, and the catalyst for institutional wellbeing. It is therefore not only fitting but essential that those who exercise this sacred responsibility be held to the highest standards of knowledge, ethics, and accountability.
Under our stewardship, the Council is committed to building a transparent, accessible, and efficient registration system that recognises merit and demands excellence. We shall enforce the provisions of the Act firmly but fairly, working alongside the Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON) and all allied bodies to ensure seamless transitions into the era of full statutory regulation.
I call upon every qualified counselling practitioner in Nigeria to register with the Council, embrace this new regulatory framework, and join us in our collective mission. Together, we shall build a Nigeria where counselling is recognised, respected, and rigorously regulated — for the glory of our profession and the good of our nation.
President, Counselling Practitioners Council of Nigeria
Strategic Priorities
Establishing a robust, transparent online registration system to bring all qualified counsellors in Nigeria into the formal regulatory framework without delay.
Actively combating unqualified practice through enforcement of the Act, protecting citizens from harm caused by unlicensed counsellors operating outside the register.
Approving training institutions and qualifications, raising the bar for counsellor education, and ensuring all pathways into the profession reflect global benchmarks.
Deepening partnerships with CASSON, universities, government ministries, and international counselling bodies to drive the profession forward collectively.
